“Short Stories” by Declan Sharma & Dave Draper – Official WLF Song

Singer Declan Sharma, who is the lead singer of local progressive rock band Da Vinci, has teamed up with Dave Draper of  FFG Studios to record “Short Stories”, a song inspired by the forthcoming Worcestershire Literary Festival.

The song was written in just two days and recorded on Tuesday 14th June 2011, and the Worcestershire Literary Festival are delighted to announce that they have adopted the song as their official anthem for the first ever festival which starts this Friday, 17th June.

The wide array of events that are taking place under the banner of the festival this month, as well as the huge interest in the idea of a literary festival for the County inspired the pair to create the song which they hope will be a lasting reminder of the first ever Worcestershire Literary Festival.  The song will be played in the Festival Information Point in Unit C7 in the Crowngate Shopping Centre Worcester, and at various events that the festival is hosting across the County.

Declan Sharma said: “I’ve been following the Worcestershire Literary Festival from the very early days of it being the Worcester Literature Festival, and I’m staggered at how quickly the festival has grown and captured the public’s imagination.  “Short Stories” is a tribute to the festival and literature, and I’m very happy to support the festival in this small way”.

Lisa Ventura, Festival Organiser said: “To have an official song for the first ever Worcestershire Literary Festival is amazing, and we intend to play it as much as possible at as many of our events as possible.   We are very grateful to both Declan Sharma and Dave Draper for writing and recording “Short Stories” and allowing us to adopt it as the official Worcestershire Literary Festival song”.

The lyrics “Short Stories” are below:

Inspired by and written to celebrate the Worcestershire Literary Festival 2011

Words by Dec Sharma
Music by Dave Draper

“It’s getting hard to track you down
Another day, another town
The station to the book store
The writer on a mystery tour

It passes off as literature
But I’ve heard it all before somewhere
I recognize the words I said
That you have reinvented

How does it feel masquerading memories
Now you’re the director
And all the world’s a stage?
You celebrate celebrity and reinvent reality
And if you don’t agree with me
Just turn another page…

You couldn’t afford to heat your flat
So in a quiet cafe you sat
Filling up those jotting pads
Your coffee going cold

And then at last your big break came
A meteoric rise to fame
From unknown to a household name
As every word was sold

How does it feel…?

I still remember a wide-eyed small-town girl
On a mission to tell her stories to the world
Now your best-sellers fill every shelf
And you’ve escaped from everything
Apart from yourself…

So here I stand in line
Wond’ring if you’ll have the time
A copy bought for you to sign
And dedicate to someone

Success like this is never free
It cost you your integrity
Can you even remember me
And where you came from?

How does it feel…?

And if you don’t like what you see
Just turn another page…
And if we’re not on the same page today
I’ll make my wayTo another page..
