Initially founded as a monastic institution designed to act as a hospital, The Commandery gained its name sometime during the 13th Century. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII the building was sold to the prominent Wylde family. During the Civil War The Commandery was used by the Duke of Hamilton as his headquarters throughout the Battle of Worcester, during which the Duke was mortally wounded. Since then the building has passed through many hands before finally being opened as a museum in 1977.
The Commandery is fully wheelchair accessible.
Car parking is available at the car park on King Street just a few minutes walk from the building.
